Assistant Project Manager (Finance)



Position Summary: The Assistant Project Manager is responsible for the estimating, scheduling, procurement, and management of specific projects under master service agreements and site specific projects across a mix of customers for which Burford's Construction serves. This position will be responsible for establishing baseline schedules, monitoring and updating of progress and cost for multiple projects, and reporting results weekly. This position also requires maintaining a positive relationship with our customers while ensuring Burford's field operations team is supplied with the pertinent information necessary to perform all work in a cost effective and timely manner. The Assistant Project Manager is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently.

 

Essential Functions:

Under minimal supervision, an Assistant Project Manager will:

  • Assist with project execution from planning to completion in accordance with company standards and environmental compliance regulations.
  • Support field operations with detailed span-ahead planning, including culvert sizing, matting strategy, grading needs, and access road design.
  • Generate accurate estimates and quantity takeoffs for materials such as rock, timber mats, culverts, geotextiles, and erosion control products.
  • Develop and maintain span tracking tools and access maps using KMZ/KML files and GIS-based solutions.
  • Coordinate equipment rentals, trucking logistics, and subcontractors.
  • Track daily progress and update schedules, cost reports, and quantity logs.
  • Ensure construction activity complies with environmental and stormwater plans (SWPPP), including documentation and installation of BMPs.
  • Assist with procurement of materials and services in support of civil scopes.
  • Attend field walkouts and preconstruction meetings with clients and foremen.
  • Participate in post-job reviews, invoice reconciliation, and job costing analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in utility or heavy civil construction (access, matting, or erosion control experience highly preferred).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Google Earth, and GIS tools (familiarity with KMZ/KML workflows required).
  • Basic understanding of civil construction methods, stormwater compliance, and erosion control techniques.
  • Knowledge of materials used in access road and erosion control (e.g., base rock, bull rock, mats, culverts, geotextile).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with field crews, foremen, clients, and vendors.
  • Strong time management, organization, and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Ability to work independently in a hybrid office/field environment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Regularly required to walk ROWs, inspect erosion control installations, and attend field visits in rugged outdoor conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and walk long distances through uneven terrain.
  • Will be exposed to weather, dirt, dust, water crossings, and heavy machinery in field conditions.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.
