Legal Support Assistant I/II - CN (Finance)

The County of Riverside's Office of County Counsel has an opportunity for a Legal Support Assistant I/II -CN to support attorneys in the Child Welfare division in Indio, CA. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a diverse range of specialized clerical tasks using legal terminology and procedures. This role involves supporting the legal staff within the Office of County Counsel.

The ideal candidate will have experience in a litigation office and familiarity with court services related to Child Protective Services (CPS) and Department of Public Social Services (DPSS). Additionally, candidates with major coursework in criminal justice or paralegal studies will be considered highly competitive for this role.

Schedule: 9/80 with a hybrid schedule (3 work from home days per pay period) after the training period which is typically 6 months. Telecommuting is at the discretion of the department and can change at any time.

Legal Support Assistant I - CN

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of specialized and responsible clerical work involving the continual use of legal terminology and procedures; assists in processing and tracking a variety of legal documents, records and correspondence; performs the required specialized legal clerical work in support of legal staff within the Office of County Counsel; and performs other related duties as required.

The Legal Support Assistant I - CN (Confidential Non-Exempt) is the entry level class in the Legal Support Assistant series and provides clerical support to attorneys and/or other County staff within the Office of County Counsel. Incumbents are assigned to either perform a moderate range of specialized legal clerical work or, in a training capacity, learn to perform a wide variety of specialized legal clerical work characteristic of the Legal Support Assistant II - CN class. The Legal Support Assistant I - CN is distinguished from the Legal Support Assistant II - CN by the latter's ability to understand and apply a more extensive range of legal procedures related to the processing of legal documents. Incumbents may be expected to promote to the journey level class of Legal Support Assistant II - CN after acquiring the necessary experience and training and demonstrating satisfactory job performance.

Legal Support Assistant II - CN

Under general supervision, the Legal Support Assistant II performs a wide variety of specialized and responsible clerical work involving the continual use of legal terminology and procedures; assists in processing and tracking a wide variety of legal documents, records and correspondence; performs responsible and difficult specialized legal clerical work in support of two to three attorneys within the Office of County Counsel; and performs other related duties as required.

The Legal Support Assistant II - CN (Confidential Non-Exempt) is the journey level class in the Legal Support Assistant series and provides clerical support to attorneys and other County staff within the Office of County Counsel. The Legal Support Assistant II is distinguished from the Legal Support Assistant I by the former's ability to understand and apply a more extensive and complex range of legal procedures, including the preparation, completion and tracking of legal documents required by the attorneys' case building process.

Meet the Team! The Office of County Counsel is a full-service law office that provides advisory and litigation support on issues of vital concern to the County and its residents such as health care, public safety, child welfare, land development, environmental protection, public finance, taxation and elections.• Serve as secretarial and clerical support to attorneys and other County staff within the Office of County Counsel; schedule appointments, screen callers, and initiate reply to routine correspondence.

• Provide the more responsible and authoritative information to law enforcement officers, attorneys, officers of the court, other staff, agencies, or the general public; train lower-level staff; interpret legal, procedural or department requisites from the record to the public, law enforcement agencies and/or attorneys; contact by phone, automated system or in person, judges, attorneys, court clerks, witnesses, medical representatives, and other County departments or government agencies in order to obtain or confirm information for case files or to arrange medical appointments, depositions or hearings; prepare case files and maintain case status records including the posting of court actions and court dates to calendars.

• Maintain files of correspondence and legal documents, including a cross-reference index file; file legal papers with the proper courts; enter record of hearings in calendar; record pleas, trials, convictions, acquittals, sentences, judgments, orders, and other dispositions of cases.

• Type from drafts, rough notes, verbal instructions, or taped dictation a variety of correspondence and legal documents, including interviews, opinions, proceedings, ordinances, contracts, agreements, orders, motions, points and authorities, complaints, warrants, subpoenas, commitments, indictments, decisions, investigation requests, extraditions, affidavits, briefs, jury instructions, dismissal sheets, reports, appeals, writs, petitions for hearings, and other civil and criminal legal documents; may receive payments, issue receipts, turn in money, and file fee receipts with the court.

• Prepare and process materials involving the use of complex source material and a thorough familiarity with the policies, procedures, legal terminology, and various applicable laws in order to obtain the necessary data; compare dictated legal references with actual reference materials to ensure that citations are accurate.

• Compile a variety of reports locating sources of information and determining proper format for finished reports; convert general information into proper legal form; compose legal papers and complete legal documents for which general forms are available.Legal Support Assistant I - CN ($43,560.82 - $67,120.17 Annually):

Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.

Experience: One year of clerical experience. (Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from an accredited college or university in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field or completion of 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field may be substituted for the clerical experience.)

Legal Support Assistant II - CN ($48,695.92 - $77,336.02 Annually):

Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.

Experience:

OPTION I: Two years of clerical experience, including one year in specialized legal services preparing and processing a variety of legal documents in a legal environment. (Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from an accredited college or university or 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field may be substituted for the non-specialized clerical experience.)

OPTION II: One year as a Legal Support Assistant I with the County of Riverside.

Requirements for All Levels:

All candidates will be required to take a typing test prior to being considered.

Skill to type 40 words per minute is required.
