Position Summary
The Principal Network Engineer's role is to ensure the stability and integrity of in-house voice, data, video, and wireless network services. This is achieved by planning, designing, and developing local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) across the organization. In addition, the Principal Network Engineer will participate with the installation, monitoring, maintenance, support, and optimization of all network hardware, software, and communication links. This individual will also analyze and resolve network hardware and software problems in a timely and accurate fashion as well as provide end user training where required. This role also participates in the protection of company data and in the planning and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure system provisioning and maintenance that is consistent with company goals, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements. Ensures all technical implementations and support are of the highest quality and meet the needs of the customers being served. Leads and/or provides guidance to junior members of the team as needed. This position at times will require flexible work hours including after hours and weekend work including on-call availability. Management reserves the ability to request other functions from this position.
Essential Functions and Job Responsibilities
- Create meaningful KPI dashboards for reporting on networking and application response time Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Monitor network performance, conduct problem-solving analysis, and implement prompt solutions with a security-first approach.
- Lead the design and development of low latency networking infrastructure to support distributed systems architecture.
- Lead and execute the design/build of public and hybrid cloud network topology leveraging industry best practices.
- Lead the design/build of containerized network topologies.
- Manage multiple high-level vendor relationships while prioritizing and relaying requirements to the team surrounding internet connectivity direction.
- Recommend, schedule, and perform software and hardware improvements, upgrades, patches for network and security equipment, servers and workstations, and equipment reconfigurations as necessary.
- Design and automate network component patching.
- Develop maintenance plans, define organizational impacts, and establish best practices while coordinating effectively with other teams.
- Maintain and contribute to our knowledge base, documentation, and SOPs.
- Develop, oversee and manage a cost control budget with measures related to leveraging public cloud resources.
- Participate in on-call support rotation on evenings and weekends. Perform occasional after-hours maintenance tasks.
- Support and maintain backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes and procedures
- Mentor other team members.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 7 or more years of experience implementing, designing, and maintaining networks, in a similar industry or consulting firm.
- ITIL v3, CCNP or similar certifications specializing in Azure and AWS cloud networking and administration are preferred.
- Mastery of networking services and protocols such as: TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, SD-WAN, SMTP, BGP, IPSEC tunnels, SNMP.
- Advanced knowledge of Cisco firewall, switch, router, and access point policy management, configuration, and deployment.
- Advanced knowledge of scalable networking design, including high availability, redundancy, failover, and load balancing in public cloud (Azure, AWS), hybrid-cloud, and datacenter environments.
- Advanced telephony management experience, preferably with Cisco UCCX as well as Microsoft Teams.
- Experience configuring and managing zero-trust network access, CASB, and secure web gateway solutions a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Environment
This position is currently fully remote and performed from a home office. The home office setting must be conducive to all guidelines outlined by the organization.
