What You'll Do:

Purpose of this Role: The General Counsel plays a critical role in supporting the Office of General Counsel by providing legal oversight, strategic guidance, and operational support across a wide range of legal areas including litigation management, regulatory compliance, insurance, HR/employment matters, and internal risk mitigation.

Value to the Team: This position serves as a key legal advisor and liaison between the OGC, senior leadership, business units, and external counsel to ensure legal consistency, protect organizational interests, and support ongoing business operations.

Duties and Responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:

  • Legal Strategy & Counsel
    • Provide legal advice and strategic support to Practice Chairs, department leads, and business units.
    • Serve as a point of escalation for issues requiring legal input across departments.
    • Translate complex legal issues for internal clients and contribute to firm-wide decision-making.
  • Litigation & Adverse Action Management
    • Preparing monthly adverse action reports for executive leadership.
    • Coordinating litigation Activity with outside counsel and internal litigation teams.
    • Drafting and reviewing correspondence to carriers regarding actual or anticipated claims.
    • Providing legal research, analysis, and recommendations on adverse actions. 
    • Oversee adverse action reporting and disclosures, including:
    • Monitor and respond to legal proceedings and service of process via CourtLink.
    • Manage settlement activities, including authority coordination, documentation, and fund disbursement.
  • Compliance & Insurance Oversight
    • Review, update, and approve Certificates of Insurance, insurance applications, and policy renewals.
    • Assess insurance coverage adequacy and advise on risk exposure.
    • Assist with firm-wide compliance matters and internal controls.
  • Attorney Lifecycle Management
    • Oversee legal aspects of attorney onboarding and offboarding, including conflict checks and records management.
    • Maintain and analyze attorney staffing data to support strategic planning.
  • Cross-Functional Legal Support
    • Liaise between OGC and internal departments, ensuring legal consistency and issue resolution.
    • Review and advise on HR and benefits agreements.
    • Coordinate with Finance and Accounts Payable on external counsel billing and payment.
  • Executive Support & Reporting
    • Draft and present the monthly executive legal summary for senior leadership review.
    • Provide legal insight and summaries for strategic meetings and operational planning.

What You Bring:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school; active license to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction required(WA preferred).
  • Minimum 5–8 years of legal experience, preferably in a combination of in-house and law firm environments.
  • Strong working knowledge of litigation processes, insurance law, employment law, and corporate compliance.
  • Experience working with or advising senior executives and cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex matters with competing deadlines.
  • Excellent legal research, drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Proficient with legal tools and platforms (e.g., CourtLink, CMS systems, contract management software).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Mortgage Servicing Industry.
  • Curiosity and exposure to the use of AI in the role of practicing attorney and in house counsel. 
  • Experience handling adverse action response, and legal risk assessment.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience of private practice or in house equivalent with experience managing client relationships. 
  • Familiarity with legal operations, data management, and legal process automation.
