DME Specialist (Healthcare)



Job Summary

Perform a variety of tasks associated with DMEPOS as directed by a physician. Assists with the efficient operation of the Excelsior Durable Medical Equipment Program. Fits and educates patients regarding proper care and use of braces, slings, cryo-therapy and other equipment. Monitors and maintains inventory of DME equipment and supplies.

Schedule:

  • Variable site locations
  • Hours include rotating schedule between 4-5 Day work week.
    • 4-day Work Week: Wed-Sat 10–12hr shift
    • 5-day Work Week: Mon-Fri (8am-5pm)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fits and instructs patients regarding proper use of durable medical equipment (DME) products; responds to patient inquires and requests.
  • Verifies patients insurance to determine patients financial responsibility when applicable. Collects co-insurance or DME deposit based on pts insurance coverage. Obtains authorizations when necessary.
  • Inventory management- Assists to ensure adequate supply of all DME products; responsible for recording all DME products dispensed via inventory management system.
  • Responsible for charge entry for all DME E-superbills including satellite offices and evening appointments.
  • Documents patients chart regarding DME fitting when appropriate.
  • Assist to coordinate with outside vendors for Bone Stimulators/dynamic bracing/traction units/TENS units/wound vacs.
  • Assure the internal customers have all necessary products for their needs, specifically surgeries.
  • Consults with physicians regarding patient DME product needs. Inform physicians of changes/modifications to equipment or availability.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Athletic Training plus 2+ years experience in an educational or clinical setting preferred
  • Related degree such as Exercise Science and/or related experience would be considered
  • Requires clinical skills and expertise in the treatment of patients with orthopedic conditions or injuries. Ability to fit, adjust and/or modify a wide range of DME products used in orthopedic practice.
  • Knowledge of medical insurance claims procedures and documentation.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and business management skills required.

Physical Demands

  • Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Involves standing, walking, and kneeling. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risk, which require following basic safety precautions.

We have multiple locations throughout the Western New York region and a free-standing ambulatory surgery center, Buffalo Surgery Center. The pay range for this position is determined based on several factors, including the candidate's years of experience, qualifications, training, licenses, designations, and the overall market conditions.
