Nursing Assistant (Healthcare)



Job summary

The Nursing Assistant/Hospitality Aide provides compassionate, non-clinical support to residents and assists nursing staff in a long-term care or residential facility. This role ensures a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for residents while promoting their dignity, independence, and overall well-being.

Responsibilities

Resident care and support:

  • Assist residents with daily tasks, such as personal hygiene, dressing, and mobility.
  • Transport residents to meals, activities, and appointments within the facility.
  • Distribute meal trays and snacks, and assist residents with dining setup (e.g., opening containers, identifying food).
  • Provide emotional support and companionship, creating a positive and warm atmosphere.
  • Promptly respond to resident call bells and requests for assistance.
  • Make regular rounds to check on residents, ensuring their call bells are within reach and their immediate needs are met.
  • Honor resident refusals of assistance and report them to the nursing staff.

Environmental maintenance:
  • Maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of resident rooms and common areas, including utility rooms and bathrooms.
  • Clean and disinfect resident equipment, such as wheelchairs, walkers, and bedside tables.
  • Manage linen distribution and make unoccupied beds.
  • Ensure resident belongings are labeled and stored properly, assisting with packing for transfers or discharge.
  • Handle trash disposal and maintain a clutter-free environment to ensure safety.

Reporting and communication:
  • Report any changes in a resident's condition to the Nurse Supervisor or Charge Nurse as soon as practical.
  • Document care activities and resident observations clearly and accurately.
  • Communicate all resident grievances, complaints, and reports of abuse or property misappropriation to the Nurse Supervisor.
  • Report all accidents, incidents, and defective equipment immediately.
  • Answer phones professionally, especially during mealtimes.
  • Adhere strictly to all facility policies regarding resident confidentiality (HIPAA), infection control, and safety.

Administrative and facility support:
  • Provide secretarial and clerical assistance at the nursing station, including filing and making copies, as requested.
  • Assist with preparing resident rooms for new admissions.
  • Run errands for residents and staff as needed.
  • Stock and unpack supplies in designated storage areas and resident rooms.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Compassionate, dependable, and trustworthy with a patient-centered approach.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks including lifting, turning, and transporting residents safely, as well as standing for extended periods.

Preferred:
  • Previous experience in a healthcare or caregiving role.
  • Familiarity with long-term care environments.
