The Applications Developer III serves as a technical leader on complex software development projects within a Linux/Unix-based academic/experimental computing environment. This role spans the full application lifecycle-from analysis and design to implementation, testing, and documentation. These include writing application interfaces, developing foundational application infrastructure, and specialized development. The incumbent is expected to appropriately and strategically apply AI tools to enhance productivity.

The position also involves general-purpose or \"utility\" programming in support of research and academic operations, such as performance benchmarking, code optimization, or testing capabilities and performance of esoteric computing environments. The developer will work closely with end users-including college administrative staff and computer science faculty-and will collaborate with technical professionals across various university departments. The Applications Developer III is also expected to mentor student employees, contribute to best practices, and adapt to the evolving demands of a dynamic academic setting. Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS or other field involving software and analytical training, and four years of IT related work experience, OR

Bachelor's degree with no specific required field and five years of IT related work experience, OR

Master's degree and three years of IT related work experience, OR

Combination of eight years of IT related work experience and validated training.

Preferred Requirements

  • Expert level knowledge with at least one popular development language such as Python, C, or C++;
  • Strong experience with developing in Linux or Unix-based environments;
  • Expertise with modern source code control systems required (e.g. git/github or similar);
  • Understanding of secure coding techniques required;
  • Able to develop high-quality efficient algorithms and programs;
  • Familiarity with using AI to improve code production preferred;
  • Familiarity with REST interfaces and popular data representations such as JSON and XML;
  • Experienced with participating in (and able to implement) source code review process within new college
  • FLSB1310 Equivalency:
    4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.
    6 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for master's degree.

  • Works with technical and non-technical users understanding problems to be solved; identifies opportunities for operational improvements using software systems

  • Develop Linux-based software interfaces between enterprise applications and other small utility applications to optimize business and academic processes
  • \n
  • Develop and modify software using appropriate languages and tools to provide responsive and innovative solutions, and new functionality in enterprise-wide and/or complex specialized systems

  • Develop systems programs for operations or performance optimization across a wide range of technologies
  • \n
  • Research, design, and develop prototypes using USF-specific selected products and technologies to demonstrate utility, productivity enhancements, and cost savings
  • \n
  • Engage in good programming practices: including source-code control, secure development and appropriate documentation
  • \n
  • Stays abreast of emerging technologies and mentor student employees
  • \n
