Job Description

PURPOSE SUMMARY. Under the supervision of the assigned supervisor, perform a wide variety of manual tasks involved in the maintenance of roads, bridges, and road construction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES.

  • Assist crew members in completing construction and maintenance activities.
  • Dig and fill holes with a pick and shovel .
  • Patch cuts and holes in the roadway .
  • Perform weed control with hand tools or herbicides .
  • Trim trees within the road right-of-way and dispose of debris in accordance with state and local standards.
  • Clean and repair culverts, bridges, etc.
  • Clean job sites and perform maintenance around buildings and facilities.
  • Assist with concrete and forming work for bridge, culvert, and cattle guard maintenance.
  • Constructing cattle guards; welding.
  • Maintain records documenting tasks completed.
  • May be required to operate some of the light equipment.
  • May be required to work on weekends during an emergency.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES . Other duties may be assigned .

QUALIFICATIONS.

A. Education. A High School Diploma or GED is preferred.

B. Experience. A minimum of six (6) months of full-time experience in any combination of manual labor and/or construction work.

C. Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County policy.

D. Licenses/Certifications. Valid Driver's License. Must maintain a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record in accordance with County policy.

E. Other (e.g., post-offer medical exam, polygraph, background check, driver's license record, etc.). Must pass pre-employment background and driving record checks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, tools, and standard practices regarding road construction (i.e., jackhammer, compact saw , shovels and rakes , etc .).
  • Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA) regulations and county policies regarding safe work practices and safety control measures.

Skill in:

  • Controlling operations of equipment or systems.
  • Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to ensure the equipment is working properly.

Ability to:

  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Read gauges on equipment and be able to operate hand tools.
  • Operate motor vehicle.
  • Perform minor preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Safely use a variety of tools and equipment related to road construction.

Compensation Range
$15.00 - $19.05
